Renga is a genre of Japanese collaborative poetry originating in the thirteenth century, with three to four poets generally being considered the minimum needed to be able to write new verse. The shelter designed provides enough room for a dozen or more poets to meet in the imaginary landscape. Pursuing a volcanic rock expanse for the design’s location, I hoped to develop something expressive and otherworldy to hopefully provide inspiration for its inhabitants. The structure consists of plywood and lightweight translucent plastic forms that could easily be carried to remote sites and simply be bolted together, and secured to the landscape with pressure joints.
